Dilston Grove by Ackroyd & Harvey

Dilston Grove (formerly known as Clare College Mission Church) located on the edge of Southwark Park in Bermondsey, London was transformed into a green chamber of living grass in collaboration with sound artist and composer Graeme Miller, Ackroyd & Harvey. This church was originally designed in early Italian style with an austere exterior which gave way to the dramatic difference created by the liveliness of the fabrics of growing grass. The clay, germinating grass seeds, water and natural light presented the sharp contrast between growth and decay, reverie and renewal. Through the interplay of light, sound and growth, this project brought resurrection to this old, inert and nonfunctional building, bringing back spiritual memories for local residence over a three week period.

Debra Hampton, Janice Caswell and Nancy Baker are three artists whose practice methods are informed by creating a greater whole than the sum of its humbled and disordered parts. They cut, paste, enumerate, and file; and from these disparate and solitary objects, assemble a cohesive narrative that attempts to satisfy and solidify a disordered beginning. Passion, obsession and minutiae are the slightly offbeat driving forces that characterize their work methodology, especially in these times of the re-entrenchment of the minimal and the deadpan.

Artist’s statement:

“These works are glass pyrographs that are made by drawing with hot molten glass, leaving the immediate charred tracery of my movement with the heat.

It is a way of capturing a fleeting moment and eternalizing it, and it gives the viewer the opportunity to see a gesture.”

News: Mental illness. (lost soul, complicated psyche, quiet loner, misunderstood, frustrated with life, experienced recent, traumatic, life-altering events that set him off; not to mention all the positive descriptors that are attached to him, i.e. intelligent, PhD candidate, honor roll student, etc.)
